Memory Care with Heart: Compassionate Support, Delivered with Dignity

It’s never easy to learn that a loved one has been diagnosed with Alzheimer’s or another dementia-related condition. At Guardian Angels, we are here to help you process the situation and understand your options to best care for your loved one.

We are committed to serving every resident with compassion and dignity. Our experienced staff undergoes in-depth dementia care training, empowering them to provide the best care possible. We get to know each resident personally, creating an individualized care plan to meet their needs. We provide support for everyday activities such as bathing, dressing, and medication, and we do it all with love and compassion. Our residents’ emotional and spiritual needs are just as important to us as their practical ones.

Our memory care suites are thoughtfully located within our assisted living communities, offering residents a private, comfortable place to call home. These dedicated spaces are safe and secure, with compassionate staff available around the clock. Residents also enjoy meaningful opportunities for connection and engagement, all within a supportive environment tailored to their needs.

Horticultural Therapy

Guardian Angels is proud to provide horticultural therapy through Eldergrow, an evidence-based program shown to offer numerous wellness benefits. Residents can participate in a variety of classes and activities with our mobile indoor sensory garden, with topics including horticulture, nature, garden art, and culinary preparation.

Horticultural therapy has been shown to offer many benefits:

  • Elevates mood
  • Improves motor skills
  • Reduces falls
  • Improves sleep
  • Improves self-esteem
  • Decreases agitation
  • Acts as an antidepressant
  • Reduces risk factors for dementia

Music Therapy

Studies have shown that music may reduce agitation, and improve behavioral issues which are common during middle-stages of dementia, and late-stages of Alzheimer’s. A person may be able to tap to a beat or sing lyrics to a song from childhood.

Art Therapy

Seniors with dementia often enjoy and benefit from creative activities that foster the opportunity for non-verbal expression. Art projects allow them to use color to represent thoughts, feelings and memories, and give them a sense of accomplishment and purpose.

At Guardian Angels, we prioritize resident health and well-being. Through our Wellness on Wheels program, we guide residents through exercises designed specifically to meet their needs and match their strengths.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • What is Memory Care?

Memory Care is a specialized type of senior care designed specifically to help individuals dealing with memory-related conditions, such as Alzheimer’s disease and other forms of dementia. This form of care is tailored to enhance the quality of life for individuals with cognitive impairments by providing a secure, structured environment that meets their unique physical, emotional, and social needs.

  • How is Memory Care different from Assisted Living?

While Assisted Living focuses on helping seniors with activities of daily living (e.g., bathing, dressing, meal preparation, medication management), Memory Care offers these services with additional support designed specifically for memory-related challenges. Memory Care communities typically offer:

    • 24/7 Supervision: To ensure safety for residents prone to wandering or disorientation.
    • Specialized Staff Training: Caregivers are trained in dementia care, focusing on techniques to minimize confusion, agitation, and stress.
    • Structured Daily Routines: Activities are designed to provide stability and reduce anxiety.
    • Secured Environments: Areas are optimized for safety with features like secured exits and emergency response mechanisms.

  • How does Memory Care differ from Skilled Nursing (Nursing Homes)?

Skilled Nursing provides intensive medical care and rehabilitation for individuals with complex physical health issues requiring constant medical oversight. Memory Care, on the other hand, is focused on managing cognitive impairments rather than advanced medical conditions. The primary emphasis is on preserving cognitive abilities, providing a safe environment, and creating opportunities for social interaction.

  • What types of services are offered in Memory Care?

Memory Care communities typically provide the following services:

    • Personalized care plans tailored to the stage of memory impairment.
    • 24/7 caregivers trained in dementia care.
    • Structured activities like music therapy, art programs, and memory games.
    • Medication management and health monitoring by licensed nurses.
    • Nutritious meals planned to encourage eating and tailored to individual dietary needs.
    • Specialized environments to stimulate memories and reduce confusion.
    • Programs focused on sensory stimulation and physical activity.

  • What are the key benefits of Memory Care?

Memory Care provides several distinct advantages for individuals experiencing memory decline:

    • Safety: Secured spaces and round-the-clock supervision reduce risks of accidents or wandering.
    • Engagement: Programs and activities specifically designed to recall memories, stimulate cognition, and promote independence.
    • Emotional Support: Trained staff and therapeutic programs help reduce anxiety, agitation, and depression.
    • Family Peace of Mind: Families know their loved one is in a safe, supportive environment with dedicated care.

  • Are there any common misconceptions about Memory Care?

Yes, there are a few myths and misconceptions that families sometimes have:

Misconception #1: “Memory Care is only for late-stage Alzheimer’s patients.”

    • Truth: Memory Care is designed for individuals at various stages of dementia or memory impairment, from mild cognitive decline to advanced conditions.

Misconception #2: “Memory Care is just like Assisted Living.”

    • Truth: While there are overlaps, Memory Care includes specialized staff and a distinct focus on cognitive health and safety.

Misconception #3: “I can provide the same level of care at home.”

    • Truth: While family caregivers play a critical role, Memory Care offers a level of expertise, structure, and support systems that are difficult to replicate in a home setting.

  • How does the daily routine in Memory Care help my loved one?

Structured daily routines in Memory Care bring familiarity, stability, and predictability to residents’ lives, which can significantly reduce stress and confusion. For example, the day may include:

    • Morning exercise and stretching sessions.
    • Therapeutic activities like gardening, art, or music classes.
    • Group meals with special attention to dietary needs and preferences.
    • Afternoon social activities such as storytelling or puzzles.
    • Calming evening routines to wind down the day and prepare for restful sleep.

  • What should families look for when choosing a Memory Care community?

When selecting a Memory Care community, consider:

    • Staff-to-resident ratio and training in dementia care.
    • Safety features like secure entrances/exits and emergency response systems.
    • Quality of life amenities (e.g., sensory rooms, outdoor walking paths).
    • Feedback from current families and online reviews.
    • Flexibility of care plans to accommodate changes in cognitive or physical health.
    • Transparency of pricing and clarity on what’s included in the cost.

  • How can families stay involved after a loved one moves into Memory Care?

Families are encouraged to remain a part of their loved one’s care journey by:

Participating in family events and activities hosted by the community.

    • Regularly communicating with staff about care updates.
    • Visiting frequently to create meaningful connections and support social engagement.
    • Sharing personal information about their loved one’s history, preferences, and values to help staff provide personalized care.

  • How do I know if Memory Care is the right option for my loved one?

If your loved one is experiencing the following signs, it may be time to consider Memory Care:

    • Increased confusion, disorientation, or frequent wandering.
    • Difficulty managing daily routines or personal care independently.
    • Progressive memory loss impacting their safety or quality of life.
    • Growing social isolation or withdrawal.
    • Signs of caregiver strain—if family members can no longer meet their loved one’s needs without significant stress.

  • What should I do if I have additional questions about Memory Care?

Reach out to the Memory Care community you’re considering for an on-site tour or consultation. Most communities offer complimentary assessments to help families understand whether this type of care is the best fit for their loved one’s specific needs. Don’t hesitate to ask about services, staff training, costs, and anything else that can help you make an informed decision.
